George Griffin Aycock was one of five brothers from Warren County, NC to serve the Old North State. Saw action from the beginning to the end with the 30th NC. Wounded in April 1865 and hospitalized in Farmville, VA, 1 April 1865. POW at hospital 15 April 1865. Farmed after the war. Died and buried in Wake County, NC, 17 April 1900.

My 4th Great Grand Uncle. Enlisted with his brother in Wilkes County 23 Sept. 1862 at 32 years old. Died of disease in a Richmond hospital, 20 April, 1863.

My 4th Great Grand Uncle, Wiley enlisted in Wilkes County at age 34, 23 Sept 1862 along with his brother. He died in Front Royal, Virginia, 28 February, 1863

Jesse O Mints enlisted as a private on 18 Jul 1861 at the age of 25.

Archibald Roach 'enlisted' in the Confederate Army on 2 Sept 1863 at Camp Holmes. The Muster Role shows a 3-year enlistment as documented by a Major Mallot. He volunteered because a Confederate detachment came to his farm to recruit soldiers. The detached troops were trying to get my GF Franklin Roach at age 11 to go with them, using force if necessary; so Archa at age 36 answered the call to protect the homeland and had to say goodbye to his wife Ruth, three young sons, including Franklin, and a 4 month old daughter. Private Archibald Roach died in about 4 months of service on 24 Jan 1864 after a brief 6 day stay in the Hospital. No cause of death was given. After significant battles, deceased soldiers were usually loaded on railroad cars like cord wood to be buried in Gordonsville about 20 miles south of Orange CH. Archa's luck was still not with him as he was buried in an unmarked grave out back of the Hospital by a colored janitor using a shallow scoop drawn by a mule,and with no doubt, very little respect. Thanks to the UDC (United Daughter of the Confederacy) he may possibly have been reunited with other Unknown Confederates now buried in a local cemetery. A suppose Ruth never knew what happened to Archibald. God Bless him. He gave all for Family and not for slavery as we have been told as history is rewritten.

Enlisted in March 1862 in New Hanover County. Present for duty until paroled in April 1865. Wounded in right hand at Spotsylvania Court House. Applied for pension. Died in 1905.

Christopher was from Dublin Co NC. Enlisted at age 17 in Capt J. C. McMillian's Co. NC Vol's. Mustered in at Wilmington, NC on 8 Oct 1861. In Dec 1862 he is sick in hospital at Richmond. After recovery he is kept at hosp. as a cook. His unit was engaged at Harper's Ferry, Antietam, Fredricksburg, Gun Swamp, South Anna Bridge, Bristo Station & Mine Run where he was captured on 7 Nov 1863 at Kelly's Ford Va. Held as POW Transferred to Lookout Point 3 Feb 1864 and exchanged at Cox's Landing on the James River 13 Feb 1865 - 1 of 2,051 Confederate's exchanged on that day. He died 7 Aug 1899 at Franklinville, Randolph Co. NC. Buried in Frison Cem, Frison, Duplin Co. NC.

Pvt. James Hirum Sholar Co. E (Duplin Turpentine Boys) 30th NC. Infantry, resided in Duplin County, enlisted at age 30 on 3 March 1862 in New Hanover Co. Captured and paroled at or near Warrentown, Va. 29 Sept 1862. wounded and lost sight of his left eye in defense of Richmond at Cold Harbor. On 3 June 1864. Captured 6 April 1865 at or near Farmville Va. confined at Newport News, Va. released on 27 June 1865 Returned to Duplin Co. to resume his former vocation--Farming. In 1903 at the age of 71 applied for and received a pension from North Carolina Date and place of death unknown.

My GG Grandfather enlisted March 3rd of 1862. Was captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse May 12th 1864 and sent to Point Lookout Md. He was then transfered to Elmira NY on Aug 10th 1864. Pvt Strickland was released on June 27 1865 and returned to Duplin County North Carolina. He is listed on the Roll of Honor with the 30th NC.

My GGGrand Uncle, survived the war.

Looking for photos of Company E, 30th North Carolina Infantry - especially between 1861 and January, 1863. Also looking for any mention in any written records of my GG Grandfather, Marley, who served with this unit until contracting pneumonia after the battle of Fredericksburg, and was transported to the receiving hospital at the old Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville, Virginia, where he dies in January, 1863.

Lorenzo Dow Eagles was a school teacher before the war at Eagles Crossroads now Crisp, NC in Edgecombe County
Enlisted in 1861 at Old Sparta, Edgecombe County with 'The Spartan Band'. He was wounded at Spotsylvania May 12,1864 at the 'mule shoe' and died 12 days later. He is buried at the confederate cemetary at Spotsylvania.

T.R. Eagles followed his older brother L.D. Eagles in the Confederate Army, joining Co. F 30th NC. He survived the war and surrendered at Appomattox C.H. in 1865 as a private

Richard David (R.D.) Brooks was my great great grandfather. From Oxford, Granville County, he enlisted at the beginning of the War, received a shoulder injury at Petersburg, fought in many of the 30th's major campaigns, and was pardoned at Appomattox. Family history records indicate that after the War ended, he returned home and married the widowed bride of his friend, last name Sizemore, who was also from Granville County, who volunteered together with R.D., and who was killed in action.

'Was born in Granville County, North Carolina in January of 1837.  He was the younger brother of Thomas Brown Daniel and the older brother of Louis Chesley Daniel, both who served in the North Carolina 55th Infantry Regiment.  Robert enlisted in Company G, North Carolina 30th Infantry Regiment at the age of 24 on March 3, 1862. He was present and accounted for until he was captured at Kelly's Ford, Virginia on November 7, 1863. Robert was confined to Point Lookout, Maryland on November 11, 1863. He was paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland on February 13, 1865 and transferred to Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia. Robert lived an additional 44 years following the WBTS. He died in Granville County, North Carolina on April 19, 1909.

Hampton Pruitt died at Grove Hospital, Winchester, Va., Dec. 15, 1863. He was from Wilkes County, NC.

William was my 3x great grandfather. He was conscripted into the Army 4/4/1863. He was 46 years old at the time.He died from an outbreak of the measles on 1/10/1864 at Orange County Courthouse, Virginia. There is a brief story of him at Ancestry.com.

Pleasant was born inn 1822 in Lanesboro Township, Anson Co. NC. He was conscripted at age 41 on 13 Sep 1863 into Co H 30th NC Infantry. Mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh, Wake Co. NC which was a camp of instruction. Their are 7 cards in his archival file. His first fight was at Bristo Station 14 Oct 1863, Mine Run, Wilderness, He was captured at Spotsylvania 12 May 1864 and sent to Point Lookout Md. Then on to Elmira, Chemung Co NY. arriving 14 Aug 1864. He died of scorbutius [ starvation ] 25 Sept 1864. His effects sheet listed his possessions as 1 knapsack, 1 or of shoes & 1 shirt. He is buried at Woodlawn National Cem, Elmira, NY. grave # 378. He has a memory stone beside his wife's grave at Hopewell Methodist Ch. Anson Co. NC. Many deaths in the union POW camps were preventable. The Commander of Prisons Col Huffman was noted for bragging that his treatment of prisoners in his care died at a higher rate than front line commanders.. At a review of his command after the war his own prison guards & staff testified about his cruelty towards the Confederate prisoners.....Several called it murder. He was allowed to retire without punishment...."May his soul find no rest"

Corporal Hardie Matthews was wounded at the Spotsylvania Courthouse in Spotsylvania, Virginia. He was later confined in Winchester, Virginia; then Forth McHenry, Virgina; then then Point Lookout, Maryland. I'm looking for a photo of his regiment.

My GGG Grandfather ..Pvt.Alexander C. McFatter .enlisted August 15,1861. He was in the 30th Regiment North Carolina ( State Troops). The Co.H 30th Regiment saw action in the battles of Seven Pines,Cold Harbor,, Appomattox, Fredricksburg,Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.

He was killed in action at the battle of Kelly's Ford (SevenPines).In November 28,1863 from gunshots to the back and shoulder. He was 48 years old.

His son, my GG Grandfather also served as Pvt.James C. Mcfatter.he served in the
Co. E 1st Regiment North Carolina Junior Reserves.He was 16 years of age.Pvt.James McFatter.was part of the, (The Last Grand Review) ceremony..and rode back alongside of General J.Johnston to Greensboro, North Carolina. where he was paroled, on May 1, 1865

John was abt. 18 years old when was conscripted at Raleigh, NC on 8 July 1863 into Co I by Col. Mallett for the war. He was shot in the upper left thigh at the battle of Kelly's Ford in Virginia and captured on 8 Nov. 1863. He was admitted to the USA Hosp and treated for the wound and associated Eruptive Fever. He was Held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC and sent on 3 Feb. 1864 to Point Lookout and on to Aikens's Landing and exchanged on 24 Feb. 1865.

Killed at Chancelorsville.

Lost a leg at Malvern Hill. Went to Texas, 1867.

Wounded & captured at Gettysburg.
In prison at Pea Island, DE & Point Lookout, MD.
Paroled Feb 1865. Went to Texas with his brother, Exum, in 1867

Lewis was 30 years old when he was conscripted. He was from Montgomery Co. NC and mustered in at Raleigh on 20 Aug. 1863. On 14 March 1864 he is on Morining Report of Jackson Hospital at Richmond Va. as being admitted for Carditis. He is assigned to Ramseur's Brigade at this time. Nov 1864 finds him assigned as a guard at 1st Division Camp Hospital , Winder, Richmond Va. The remarks section of the card reads / detailed by Gen. Lee. 21 Jan. 1865 he is on medical furlough with diagnosis of chronic diarrhea 29 March 1865 he is detailed as a guard to assist with a prisoner exchange and is assigned as a guard on the Flag of Truce Boat. 6 April 1865 he is captured and is on a POW roll at Fort McHenry, Md. He was paroled 1 June 1865. Robert was the son of James Thomas b. 1794 and Charlotte Roper b. 1805. He was my 1st cousin four times removed.

My gr-gr-gr grandfather, Capt John G. Witherspoon, was mortally wounded at Kelly's Ford, VA on 7 Nov 1863.
